This Brexit deal with the EU, signed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, keeps the pledge made to the British people at the 2019 General Election. In 2016, a majority in the country voted to leave. In Harlow 68% voted to leave. I have always believed that it was my duty as MP to follow the democratic wishes of the British people. Brexit should mean Brexit.
The deal means that Great Britain will keep control of our laws, our waters, our borders and our monies. We will be able to have an Australian points based immigration system, and will no longer be subject to the EU Court of Justice. We are outside the EU customs union and the single market. In the future, Britain will no longer have to send many billions of pounds of taxpayer monies to the EU as part of our membership fees.
The Government has signed a Canada style trade deal with the EU giving much needed certainty and stability for our business and commerce.
It is a good day for our country. From 1 January 2021, Great Britain will be an independent country once again.
